Our great Club has such an illustrious history - and many people may not even know it!
We'll talk about the adult section here - but please read through because as we all know, the children and young people are always the future of any great Club and we can absolutely guarantee you that's where our hearts lie...
Breightmet United Football Club was actually founded in 1880 - yes, 144 years ago this year - and that makes us one of the oldest clubs in the country! There are not many details about back then on record unfortunately but we can tell you that we plied our trade in the Bolton & District Amateur Football League and had spells in the West Lancashire League and the Bolton Combinations - before we joined the Manchester Football League in 1990.
Did you know we used to regularly compete in the FA Cup as well in our earlier days? And in 1911, we played Darwen FC in the 1st round - losing - and missing out on a trip to Highbury to take on the mighty Arsenal in Round 2! Can you imagine if that ever happened again eh?
In the 1920-21 FA Cup, we defeated Morecambe in the Preliminary Round replay! Our spell in the West Lancs League began on 1927-28 where we finished 9th - a finish that we would repeat each season until 1930-31. We then left the league in 1934 - having just recorded our best-ever finish of 8th.
Let's get back to more modern times now. We found ourselves playing in the Manchester League's Division 1 from 1990-91 where we were - more often than not - a solid mid-table outfit - before beginning to threaten the higher reaches of the table regularly in the early 2000's. This led to us eventually winning the Division 1 title in 2003 which saw us promoted to the Premier Division. In truth, that's probably the highlight of the Club so far - and something we're aspiring towards again...
Unfortunately though, we struggled in that top-tier - with our best finish being 10th in 2006 - but we finished bottom on two occasions and not finishing higher than third-bottom during our six-year tenure there. The last bottom-placed finish saw us relegated back to Division 1 where - after finishing 4th in that first season back down there, we went back to regularly finishing mid-table.
And since then we've struggled - until now! We ended up going into Division 2 after a league re-organisation and we finished bottom in 2019 - with -2 points after a 3-point deduction! Then as COVID hit and interrupted things, another couple of seasons struggle came and we competed with Cavaliers for the wooden-spoon before eventually pulling out of the league completely. A sorry day for the Club - but for the current crop of Committee Members, it was the opportunity they wanted - and they've grabbed it and ran!
A major Club re-structure took place and Breightmet United Football Club returned - with Simon Wilcox and Baz Gallagher taking our 1st-team so close to promotion from Division 3 this season! Joined by our 'New Boys' for next season, it really does look like the adult section is thriving and going to compete for honours across the board. Joined by Sean and Duncan firing aside all-comers on a Sunday, things look really bright - and something for our younger generations to aspire to...
Because there's the future. The Youth Section of Breightmet United FC could not be healthier - with squads for nearly every age-group up from u6's - some Years having four squads! This is all run by volunteers who commit their time to developing the future stars of the Adult sections and who knows - we could get back to being in the FA Cup if we want it enough!
All of our Coaches are FA-qualified and possess their DBS-clearance and relevant Safeguarding/First-Aid certificates - so we can assure you that when your child joins our family, that's exactly what they are treated like. Part of our family! We have our very own Club House where you can grab hot and cold drinks - some lovely beers on sale - watch live sports on the TV and really feel the family atmosphere we're creating down there. Come and have a see for yourself...
Ian Wright (Club Chairman) has this people! He and the rest of the Committee's vision is perfect and can and will only see growth for this great, historic club. There are some excellent and exciting plans afoot for the whole Club and together, we can make sure that we continue providing the best quality football and facilities for the community of Breightmet!
